Windshield washer fluid (methanol-based) — household safety profile

Extreme risk

Windshield cleaning fluid containing 20-50% methanol as antifreeze/solvent, with surfactants and blue dye.

What is this product?

Windshield cleaning fluid containing 20-50% methanol as antifreeze/solvent, with surfactants and blue dye. Methanol is acutely toxic: ingestion of 10-30 mL can cause permanent blindness; 60-240 mL is fatal. Methanol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase to formaldehyde and formic acid, which damages the optic nerve and causes metabolic acidosis. Significant dermal absorption also occurs. Blue color and liquid form lead to mistaken identity as sports drinks (especially by children).
