Rubber cement (solvent-based adhesive) — household safety profile
Elevated riskSolvent-based rubber cement containing natural or synthetic rubber dissolved in n-hexane and/or heptane.
What is this product?
Solvent-based rubber cement containing natural or synthetic rubber dissolved in n-hexane and/or heptane. Used in arts/crafts, paper mounting, and office applications. n-Hexane is neurotoxic — chronic exposure causes peripheral neuropathy (hexane neuropathy) through its metabolite 2,5-hexanedione, which crosslinks neurofilament proteins. Heptane is less neurotoxic but still a CNS depressant. Both solvents are highly flammable and have significant abuse potential as inhalants. Use in schools and by children/adolescents raises particular concern for both neurotoxicity and intentional inhalant abuse.

Solvent
- n-Hexane — Neurotoxic. Metabolized to 2,5-hexanedione which causes peripheral neuropathy (hexane neuropathy). OSHA PEL 500 ppm. ACGIH TLV 50 ppm (8-hr TWA). Highly flammable. Abuse potential as inhalant.
How to use it more safely
- Use only in well-ventilated areas
- Cap tightly immediately after use
- Use minimum amount needed
- Keep away from heat/flame/sparks
Red flags — when to walk away
- Contains n-hexane and used in enclosed space — Neurotoxic solvent exposure
Green flags — what to look for
- Heptane-only or water-based formula — Eliminates n-hexane neurotoxicity concern
Safer alternatives
- Glue stick (solid PVA adhesive) — Zero solvent exposure; safe for children; adequate for most paper bonding
- Heptane-based rubber cement — Heptane is less neurotoxic than n-hexane; still flammable but reduced neuropathy risk
