What is this product?
Turpentine and mineral spirits are the traditional solvents used by oil painters for thinning paint, cleaning brushes, creating glazing mediums, and producing ground preparations. Gum turpentine (distilled from pine resin) contains alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, delta-3-carene, and other monoterpenes that are potent mucous membrane irritants, CNS depressants, and skin sensitizers — chronic exposure in artist studios is associated with painter's syndrome (organic solvent-induced encephalopathy) presenting as memory impairment, concentration difficulty, personality changes, and fatigue. Mineral spirits (white spirit, Stoddard solvent) are petroleum distillate blends (C7-C12 aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons) with similar CNS depressant properties and additional concerns from aromatic content — standard mineral spirits contain 15-20% aromatics (including trimethylbenzenes), while 'odorless mineral spirits' (OMS) have been hydrotreated to remove most aromatics, reducing but not eliminating inhalation hazard. A professional oil painter using traditional techniques may be exposed to turpentine vapor concentrations of 50-200 ppm in a closed studio — the ACGIH TLV is 20 ppm. Artist studio ventilation is frequently inadequate, and many painters use solvents for decades without respiratory protection, accumulating chronic neurotoxic exposure.
