Garage Floor Epoxy Sealant (BPA-Based Epoxy Resin, Epichlorohydrin Residual, VOC Off-Gassing During Cure) — household safety profile
Moderate riskGarage floor epoxy sealants are two-part coatings consisting of a DGEBA (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) resin mixed with a polyamine or polyamide hardener that cross-links to form a durable, chemical-resistant floor coating.
What is this product?
Garage floor epoxy sealants are two-part coatings consisting of a DGEBA (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) resin mixed with a polyamine or polyamide hardener that cross-links to form a durable, chemical-resistant floor coating. DGEBA is synthesized from bisphenol A (BPA) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) — both classified as hazardous substances. Residual BPA in uncured epoxy resin ranges from 1-10 ppm (BADGE, BPA diglycidyl ether, is the functional form). Residual epichlorohydrin — an IARC Group 2A probable human carcinogen and potent skin sensitizer — is present at 1-10 ppm in commercial DGEBA resin. During the 3-7 day curing process, epoxy systems off-gas VOCs including residual BPA, glycol ethers, and amine hardener vapors (cyclohexylamine, isophoronediamine) that are strong respiratory and skin sensitizers. Amine hardeners cause allergic contact dermatitis in 1-3% of occupationally exposed workers (Aalto-Korte et al., 2015). EPA OPPT estimates 10-15% of DIY garage epoxy applications occur with inadequate ventilation, creating enclosed-space inhalation exposure. The cured epoxy film is chemically stable and low-risk, but the mixing, application, and curing phases present significant acute exposure hazards.
