Carbon Nanotube-Infused Sportswear and Equipment — MWCNT Reinforcement in Consumer Athletic Products — household safety profile

Low risk

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) — cylindrical carbon nanostructures with diameters of 5-100 nm and lengths of 1-100 micrometers — are incorporated into sporting equipment (bicycle frames, tennis rackets, golf clubs, hockey sticks) and performance sportswear as lightweight structural reinforcement.

What is this product?

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) — cylindrical carbon nanostructures with diameters of 5-100 nm and lengths of 1-100 micrometers — are incorporated into sporting equipment (bicycle frames, tennis rackets, golf clubs, hockey sticks) and performance sportswear as lightweight structural reinforcement. MWCNTs increase tensile strength by 10-30% while reducing weight, making them attractive for high-performance athletic applications. However, certain MWCNT geometries exhibit asbestos-like pathogenicity: rigid, needle-like MWCNTs with diameters >20 nm and lengths >5 micrometers cause frustrated phagocytosis in alveolar macrophages, leading to persistent inflammation, fibrosis, and — in chronic animal studies — mesothelioma. IARC classified one specific MWCNT type (MWCNT-7, Mitsui) as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) in 2014, while noting insufficient data for other MWCNT types. Consumer exposure during normal product use is minimal — CNTs are embedded in polymer or epoxy matrices. The risk materializes during manufacturing (occupational inhalation of free CNTs), product damage (fracture of CNT-reinforced composites releasing CNT-laden dust), and end-of-life processing (cutting, grinding, or incinerating CNT-containing products). The parallels to early asbestos product development — encapsulated fibers in a matrix, safe during use, hazardous during damage and demolition — have prompted calls for precautionary regulation before widespread consumer adoption.
